Our Lady of Cobre also known as Our Lady of Charity is the patroness of Cuba. The story behind this sculpture began around 1608 when two brothers and their slave set off in a small boat across the Bay of Nipe for some salt. As they were crossing the bay, a huge storm erupted and they began to pray to the image of the Virgin Mary that the slave was wearing around his neck, and just as quickly the skies cleared and the storm passed. It is said that a statue of the Virgin Mary was seen holding a baby in the water completely dry, the statue was taken on board and upon returning to dry land, chapels were erected in her honor.
