Top 10 most Famous Sculptures and Statues

If you want to impress people at cocktail parties, it’s nice to have the worldly appearance of someone who knows a lot about the famous sculptures and statues of the world. It is with this in mind that we present our picks for the TOP 10 Sculptures of all time.

Before we start, let us disclose that we are primarily ranking sculptures as opposed to monuments like the Statue of Liberty. If it were not for this, the Statue of Liberty would definitely be the most popular statue in the United States. So without further ado here are our picks:

FAMOUS TOP TEN
10. Savannah Bird Girl Statue
Coming in at number ten is a relative newcomer to the world of sculpture. Sculpted in 1936 by Sylvia Shaw Johnson, the popularity of this statue soared after it appeared on the best selling book “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil” by John Berendt.
9. Hermes
The only surviving work of the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles, this work of art set the standard for the sculpting of facial features and hair.
8. The Discus Thrower
Another ancient Greek Statue, this work of art is renowned for its contribution to the contrapossto form of sculpture.
7. Lady Justice Statue
Prevalent in nearly every courthouse and legal office in the country, it’s the symbol for the impartiality and power of our laws.
6. The Kiss
The first of Auguste Rodin’s masterpieces to make our list. This sculpture is one of the most seductive pieces of art ever to gain such popular recognition.
5. Caesar Augustus
Although not necessarily respected as some of the greatest works of all time, statues of Caesar Augustus and his uncle Julius Caesar still reign as some of the most famous statues of all time.
4. The Pieta
The first of two sculptures from Michelangelo, this rendition of the Pieta was the first to represent Mary as a young and serene.
3. The Thinker Statue
The masterpiece of Auguste Rodin. It was originally designed for the Gates of Hell, but instead became a stand alone sculpture that would earn him the reputation as the world’s best sculptor since Michelangelo.
2. The Venus de Milo
It’s amazing that an armless statue with an unknown sculptor could have gained so much notoriety, but this sculpture that dates from the second century BC still reigns as one of the most famous statues in the world.
1. The Statue of David
One of Michelangelo’s many masterpieces, this sculpture earns the top position on most people’s list of the most famous sculptures of all time. What’s more amazing is that he sculpted it from a piece of marble that was actually too thin for the project.
