From
the tooth fairy to Tinker Bell, everyone at some
point in their life encounters these mystical
and magical creatures. Popularized by the Irish,
it was believed that the fairies were a previously
conquered society who was driven into hiding when
the Celts invaded Ireland. The Pagan gods of these
people were skilled in building and magic and
went underground to live in the tombs and mounds
they had built. Hidden from sight, they grew smaller
and smaller in the popular imagination until they
turned into fairies.
Other cultures believe that fairies are the souls
of the dead, people not good enough to enter Heaven
yet not bad enough for Hell. They wander the “Nether
Land” in between and are occasionally seen
by humans. Still others view fairies as angels
that have been cast out of Heaven or local gods
that dwindled in majesty and size over time.
