Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic Friar and Preacher, he is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. He is the patron saint of animals and the environment and in Catholic and Anglican churches it is customary to hold ceremonies blessing the animals on his feast day of October the 4th.
