Asclepios Greek God Of Medicine Statue 22" High
This statue of Asclepios, god of medicine, is a direct reproduction of the statue found in the Temple of Asclepios at Epidauros. Asclepios has been sculpted to appear as a wise and sage person with thick wavy hair and beard, wearing the traditional cloak in the style of learned teachers of his time. Asclepios, greek god of medicine, leans on a staff around which the sacred snake is entwined. Asclepios was the son of Apollo and Coronis, daughter of Phlegyas. When Coronis was consumed by flames for being unfaithful to Apollo, he removed Asclepios before he was born and placed Asclepios in the care of Cheiron. Cheiron taught Asclepios the art of healing. Eventually, Asclepios was able to resurrect the dead. This power of resurrection angered Hades, god of the underworld, and he appealed to Zeus for help. Zeus agreed to strike Asclepios with a thunderbolt. Asclepios had many children. He favored two of his sons, Machaon and Podaleirios and two of his daughters Hygeia and Panaceia. These four children went with their father, Asclepios, on the Trojan expedition with thirty other ships. His symbol was the serpent, however he also related to the olive, cypress, and pine trees, and the cock, dog, and goat. Asclepios the Greek god of medicine was actually considered a lesser god, but was worshipped by most Grecians. The Grecians would have festivals every five years in Epidauros to honor Asclepios. It was Asclepios descendants that formed the Ascelpiadae, a sacred brotherhood, that held the secrets of healing which were passed on from father to sons to grandsons, etc. If you are a medical practitioner, this Asclepios statue, the Greek god of medicine, is a striking statue, especially when the statue is mounted on a marble column, and would go nicely in a corner of your office.
