Egyptian Goddess Bastet Statue
The goddess Bastet, a woman with the head of a domestic cat, was the daughter of Ra and protectress of women, children and cats, starting around 3000 BC. Goddess Bastet was the goddess of sunrise, pleasure, music, dance, fertility, birth and family. Bastet was the wife of Ptah, and mother of Mihos, her name means devouring lady. Goddess Bastet's twin sister, Sekhmet is also a goddess, but with the head of a lioness. She represents the darker side of the goddess. Sekhmet is the destructive forces in the human and nature, while Bastet is everything pure, good and life-giving. Together, the sister goddesses make up a whole - the balance of good and evil. Goddess Bastet was originally the goddess of the sun, however because of Greek influence she became the lunar goddess. Goddess Bastet is still worshiped in parts of Egypt on October 31.
