The competitors represented a group or location, the first groups where called; the Blues, the Whites, the Greens, and the Reds. The charioteers wore the colors of their group when racing. The chariot race competition between these groups was fierce and often lead to violence. The groups most favoured by the public were the Greens and Blues. Chariot racing was a very dangerous occupation with most careers ending in death, although those who were successful became celebrities and heroes.
